Issues with Your Subaru’s AC System Can be Solved in Lowell

by Mechanics Direct September 14, 2020

Air conditioning is perhaps one of the most important comfort components of your vehicle. When it works, you may not even be aware it’s there beyond turning it on and enjoying the sweet relief of cool air blasting over your face. However, when it fails, you’re very uncomfortable.

In the winter, an air conditioner problem may be no issue, but in the summer, prepare to sweat as you are trying to commute from location to location. If you notice that the air conditioning in your Subaru is failing or maybe it’s already called it quits, it’s imperative that you have a mechanic examine the issue as quickly as possible. However, before you go in blind, it might be helpful to know a few reasons why your A/C went kaput.

The Importance of Your Air Conditioner

When your air conditioner fails, your fun car ride can quickly turn to misery, especially in the summer when temperatures and humidity skyrocket. Opening a window just doesn’t cut it. Prepare to sweat.

In severe heat conditions, a broken air conditioner isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s dangerous.

For instance, on a sunny 70-degree day, the temperature inside a closed car cabin can reach 104 degrees after a mere 30 minutes. In 100-degree weather, the cabin temperature can skyrocket to as high as 170 degrees.

Common Reasons Your Air Conditioner Might Be Failing

A Clogged Air Filter: If the air running into your cabin is lukewarm or cool, but not cold, the issue could simply be a clogged cabin air filter. This is a relatively quick and easy fix. Just have the air filter replaced.

Electrical Issues: If your air conditioner quits completely or intermittently, the problem may be due to damaged, cracked, or frayed wiring. Sometimes, the problem might be as simple as a burnt fuse that needs replacing. Either way, it’s a good idea to bring your vehicle to a licensed mechanic as soon as possible if you suspect electrical issues are the culprit.

Refrigerant Leak: If you have a refrigerant leak, your air conditioner likely won’t work at all or you may notice diminished cooling ability over a short period of time. Refrigerant plays a vital role in your Subaru’s engine, as it absorbs heat, it turns from a liquid into a gas, and then expels that heat as it turns back into a liquid. This cycle allows your system to release heat efficiently and effectively. So if you have a leak, your A/C’s ability to function will be severely compromised.

Compressor Problems: Your compressor is responsible for pressurizing the refrigerant in your vehicle’s air conditioning system. This allows the refrigerant to circulate properly and provide your cabin with cool air. However, if the compressor is failing or damaged, your refrigerant won’t be able to move properly, and your air conditioning system will begin to blow out hot air. Compressor issues should always be examined by a certified mechanic.

Condenser Issues: Your condenser is responsible for cooling the hot, gaseous refrigerant back into a liquid state. However, if your condenser is blocked, damaged, or malfunctioning, your refrigerant won’t be able to release its heat and cool down again. Not only does this compromise your air conditioner, but potentially your engine as well.

If the issue is a blocked condenser, your mechanic may be able to address the issue at the source and remove the clog. However, if the issue is that your condenser is broken or cracked, it will likely have to be replaced.
