Signs of a Bad EGR Valve

• Check Engine Light: The check light is one of the most popular signs that show that the EGR valve is faulty. Although this warning light may come on for many other reasons, one of the most frequent is EGR valve problems.

After removal, use vacuum on the valve and determine whether it opens and closes properly or not. If it doesn’t, then the valve may be stuck or damaged and will need to be replaced.
• Inspect Vacuum Lines: At other times the issue might not be with the EGR valve but with the vacuum hoses connected to the valve. Disconnected or severed vacuum lines can hinder the operations of the valve. Check the vacuum lines for any possible signs of tear or cracks and replace them if they do show signs of wear.
• Clean EGR Valve: Sometimes you may realize that your EGR valve is blocked by carbon deposits, in this case, you can clean it and the problem will be solved. The valve can be cleaned using an EGR valve cleaner or a carb cleaner, solvents can also be used to clean the valve. Just unscrew the valve and blow the cleaner into the valve to liquefy the carbon deposits.
• Replace the EGR Valve: If cleaning does not do the job or if it is determined that the valve is bad, then the valve will have to be replaced. Fortunately, the EGR valve is an easy component to replace. Many replacement valves have instructions on how to install them, but if you are in any doubt it is always better to ask a mechanic.
